PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Jamie McComb singled in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning of game two, and Shannon Padula held down Chestnut Hill to record her second win of the afternoon as West Chester increased its winning streak to 10 straight with a doubleheader sweep over the host Griffins.
The Golden Rams posted wins of 4-0 and 3-2 in eight innings to improve their record to 15-6 on the year. Chestnut Hill fell to 1-13.
Chestnut Hill College put the game-tying run across with two out in the bottom of the seventh in game two to force extra innings. But West Chester quickly moved on top in the eighth and let Padula work her magic from there.
The Griffins came to bat in the bottom of the seventh down 2-1. Colleen Devlin started the Chestnut Hill rally with a one-out, infield single. Two batters later, Janean Ciancia reached first on an error by the shortstop, putting the tying run in scoring position. Katlin McKeever plated that run with a single up the middle to force extra innings.
Padula (12-3) combined with starter Ashley Saussaman to allow two unearned runs on four hits. They walked two and struck out five in eight innings.
Shannan Burdziak took the loss for the Griffins, working eight innings. She allowed one earned run on six hits while walking two and striking out one.
The Golden Rams held the Griffins to two hits in the first game scoring three runs late to ensure the 4-0 victory. West Chester carried a 1-0 lead through the first five innings of game one, as Padula and McKeever took turns mowing down the opposition.
In the sixth, the Golden Rams put their first two batters aboard with back-to-back singles. McComb then brought them both home on a single down the left field line, she would later score on a single from Mandy Jankowski putting the Golden Rams up 4-0.
The Griffins got two runners aboard in the sixth, but failed to score a run as Padula threw a complete-game shutout surrendering two hits and one walk while striking out two. Her walk in the bottom of the sixth broke up a string of 28 consecutive innings without yielding a free pass.
McKeever also went the distance. She allowed four runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out two in the loss.
McComb finished game one 1-for-3 with two RBI. Megan Harbaugh was 2-for-3 with a home run as well. McComb went 2-for-4 in the nightcap with the game-winning RBI in the eighth. Alisha DiMarzio scored twice.
Tara Colantuono stole her 62nd career base in the first game to become the school's all-time stolen base leader.
West Chester will be back in action again on Monday when the Golden Rams host PSAC West rival Indiana (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
